Splash Shield is the panel around the Mazda wheel opening that carries the arch line and shields the inner structure. Genuine Mazda part number BP4K-26-261B.
Impact damage from a wheel strike or a minor collision distorts the panel and breaks the liner mounts, which then lets water into the cavity. Model year facelifts often change the arch profile even where the door and hood are unchanged.
